FP1: Thiim and Macdonald top wet opening session at Silverstone

> Result: FP1

Nicki Thiim and Dean Macdonald set the fastest times in first practice for the Silverstone 500 this morning.

Wet conditions throughout led to two red flags, the second of which brought the hour-long session to an end with five minutes remaining. Ironically, it was Thiim’s stranded TF Sport co-driver Mark Farmer who contributed to the early stoppage and prevented anyone improving on the Dane’s best of 2m19.720s.

Jamie Stanley made an impressive start to JMH Auto’s British GT3 debut by lapping 0.168s slower than the Aston Martin with 15 minutes remaining. RAM Racing’s Callum Macleod improved at a similar moment to finish third at the expense of championship leader Phil Keen who dropped to fourth in the final reckoning.

Beechdean AMR and JRM completed the top-six ahead of TF Sport’s second Aston Martin and Balfe’s McLaren.

Meanwhile, HHC’s Dean Macdonald denied Generation AMR SuperRacing’s Matt George GT4 top spot after the Aston Martin led most of the session. Championship leader Macdonald jumped ahead at two-thirds distance before George pegged the McLaren back.

Tolman’s #4 570S shared by James Dorlin and Josh Smith finished a tenth further back, while Team Parker Racing’s Scott Malvern ended up fourth. Century’s #43 BMW, which also contributed to the session’s early finish, was fifth ahead of HHC’s second McLaren.

Several more cars experienced issues, including Century’s #9 BMW which stopped on track without completing a lap, and Academy’s #62 Aston Martin which harmlessly spun into Copse Corner’s gravel trap early on.
